Falling short of the near perfect symmetry of story and art that Pixar have mostly branded its own, “Epic,” from the creators of the “Ice Age” franchise, has an engaging aura, especially for the youngest of audiences.

Based loosely on William Joyce’s “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs,” the 3-D animated adventure chronicles teenager Mary Katherine (Amanda Seyfried), who is recruited by a nature spirit Queen Tara (Beyoncé Knowles) to help the Leafmen save their world from evil warriors.

Directed by Chris Wedge, it also features the voices of Colin Farrell, Christoph Waltz, Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler and Pitbull. “Epic” was released Aug. 20 on Blu-ray Combo Pack, Deluxe Edition Blu-ray and DVD by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Features include the Mysteries of Moonhaven Revealed where viewers can meet the filmmakers, animators and artists from Blue Sky Studios, who conjured up the enchanted forest world where the story is set.

There’s also The Epic Life At Two Inches Tall — How would life be if you were only two inches tall? Apparently, besides being small, there are some surprising and amazing benefits. In addition, the Epic DVD boasts an Epic Coloring & Storybook Builder App allowing the viewer to color their own Epic story with exclusive pages on iOS or Android devices.
