Reality television star and socialite Kim Kardashian made news headlines last year after marrying the music mogul Kanye West and giving birth to the couple’s first daughter, North. West and Kardashian haven’t hesitated to share that they want to give North a sibling as soon as possible, as the Huffington Post notes, but they have already run into a problem: according to the latest reports, Kim may be physically unable to give birth to another baby.
In a recent episode of the popular reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” Kim went through a surgery to remove leftover parts of the placenta, which were stuck to her uterus after giving birth to her first child.
Doctors reportedly advised her that surrogacy would be the best option, as opposed to attempting to conceive and give birth to a second child herself.
Fertility specialists had previously warned Kim a while ago that if she did give birth to a second child, she would likely have to undergo a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) immediately after giving birth.
In one particular clip, cameras recorded Kim’s initial reaction as she called up her husband and recounted what the fertility doctor had said.
“So, when you have another baby,” the doctor reportedly explained, “your placenta will go right to that hole [created by the placenta from the first pregnancy] and then we’ll have a team of doctors waiting right there, to remove your uterus and put you into emergency surgery right there because you can’t bleed too much.”
It’s easy to see why her doctors changed their advice, and are now saying that the celeb would be safer by avoiding pregnancy altogether, and instead looking into surrogacy.
While this problem has likely been blown out of proportion, and even though there are still alternatives that can give the couple another child (or multiple children), far too many average American couples know how devastating an infertility issue can be. In fact, it’s estimated that about one in every eight couples who are trying to conceive have trouble getting pregnant and/or sustaining a healthy pregnancy.
The Kardashian lifestyle is typically seen as unapproachable and excessive to most Americans, but in this brief struggle, it’s not hard to imagine that many women are empathizing with Kim.
“There is nothing more on this that I want ore than to be pregnant again and to go through that experience,” Kim stated on her reality show. “I would pay any amount of money to have that.”
