A dispute between a landlord and a tenant is probably pretty commonplace, but a spat going on in West Hollywood is a little different. The dispute began as an eviction but has quickly morphed into something that some say is politically motivated.
A spray-tanner to the celebrities, Jimmy Coco (also known as James W. Snyder) is suing West Hollywood City Council Candidate Larry Block, as the result of an alleged wrongful eviction — and a myriad of other complaints. Block says that the lawsuit is merely a politically motivated attack on his character.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Snyder claims to have rented a property from Block — a converted garage that he found out was an “illegal bootleg unit.” The lawsuit alleges that Block tried to evict Snyder after a disagreement regarding parking.
As of 2011, there were more than 1.2 million licensed attorneys in the United States — a number which has undoubtedly grown since then. Snyder’s attorney, Neal S. Zaslavsky, apparently sent copies of the lawsuit to various city officials.
One of these recipients is Mayor John D’Amico, who is one of Block’s opponents in the race for the city council position. The election is less than a month away. WEHOville reports that D’Amico confirmed he had been made aware of the lawsuit on January 29th.
“This is absolutely politically motivated,” Block told the Times. “This is a bogus lawsuit, a frivolous lawsuit that has no merit whatsoever […] They’re trying to derail my candidacy.”
In addition to the allegations that the space in question was illegally turned into an apartment, the parking permit troubles, and the apparent wrongful eviction, Snyder accuses Block of unwanted sexual advances.
At this point, it’s unclear how the lawsuit itself will resolve, but as a politically motivated tool for “derailing” Block’s candidacy — we’ll see at the polls.
