Lynwood event salutes Latin American countries

LYNWOOD — The Greater Lynwood Chamber of Commerce and the newly formed Multicultural Foundation of Lynwood, with the support of the city, have formalized a grand event for Friday that celebrates the independence of six Latin American countries — MexicoEl SalvadorGuatemalaNicaraguaCosta Rica and Honduras — whose natives reside in Southeast Los Angeles County.

“People from all over Latin America live here in the Southeast cities and they celebrate Independence Day (Dia de la Independencia), too,” said Edwin Hernandez, president of the Chamber of Commerce. “A Fiestas Patrias celebration that encompasses all of our cultures under one roof, how beautiful is that?”

Spearheaded by Hernandez, who is also a member of the Lynwood City Council, “Celebrating Independence: Fiestas Patrias 2014” will bring together an array of performers and artists for a dinner and gala that will ultimately benefit an all-inclusive Fiestas Patrias Parade projected to take place next year.

Tickets for the event are $25 or $200 for a table of 10. The banquet will be held in Bateman Hall, 11330 Bullis Road.

Hernandez said the event will be separate from the Fiestas Patrias celebration and Civic Ceremony that takes place at Lynwood’s Plaza Mexico every year.

“Thousands of people come to the Plaza Mexico event. It’s a beautiful event,” he said. “Our dinner and arts spectacular will be a little different. For one, it’s a fundraiser for the 2015 Fiestas Patrias Parade, and two, it will help bridge all of the different cultures that live among the Southeast cities and beyond. We all celebrate Fiestas Patrias. Why not celebrate it together with music, food and dance?”

Thirteen different artists representing the six countries will entertain with their songs, music or dance. The dinner will also consist of a variety of different foods from different cultures.

Gilbert Radillo, president of the Multicultural Foundation of Lynwood, hopes that the community will come out to support the event.

“This beautiful event will be the first step in reaching our goal of creating a Fiestas Patrias Parade that will encompass all of the countries that celebrate their independence in September. Parades like that are very rare, and we are aiming to start a new tradition here in the city of Lynwood.”

The event will be held from 7 to 11:30 p.m.

Donations for the event can be made via the city’s website at www.lynwood.ca.us, using the Fiestas Patrias link under What’s New.
