CULVER CITY — A new kind of pet store — one devoted to finding homes for dogs and cats rescued from animal shelters — opened here last Saturday

Adopt & Shop combines pet adoption, philanthropy and retail service.

It was developed by Dr. Gary and Alya Michelson who founded a nonprofit called Michelson Found Animals. While pet adoption is not a new phenomenon, the Michelsons are advocates of an innovative approach, aiming to reduce the death toll of dogs and cats killed in local shelters.

“Adopt & Shop…is a tremendous achievement and an important step toward eliminating shelter euthanasia … in Los Angeles,” said Found Animals Executive Director Aimee Gilbreath. She said the store, located at 4235 Sepulveda Blvd., hopes to eventually save the lives of up to 2,000 cats and dogs annually that might otherwise be put to sleep in local animal shelters.

Located in a retrofitted auto body and garage, the shop has the square footage of a mini-mansion (almost 10,000 square feet) featuring high-end kennels, customer-centric retail space, grooming bays and a daycare area.

The store stocks a complete line of products for cats and dogs. Combining pet adoption, retail and philanthropy, the facility –14 months in the making– joins a sister store in Lakewood Center Mall in Lakewood.

Proceeds from Adopt & Shop retail sales help to expand the budget of the nonprofit “Kitten Foster Project,” another pet project of the Michelsons. “Every kitten fostered is a life saved…we expect to save the lives of 1,000 kittens this year,” Gilbreath said.
