SANTA FE SPRINGS — The City Council has approved an allocation of $37,748 to distribute to 10 music and cultural programs in the community.
The allocations were recommended by the council-appointed Heritage Arts Advisory Commission and comes from the Art In Public Places Fund, a fee developers must pay upon submitting construction plans.
Allocations went to:
- Jersey Elementary School’s Meet the Masters program, $2,462.
- Lakeview Elementary, classroom art, $702.
- Los Nietos Middle School, band music, $400.
- Pioneer High School, field trip to Getty Center, $735.
- Rio Hondo Symphony Association, music enrichment program in the schools and children’s concert, $7,708.
- St. Paul High School theater, choral music, art, field trip to Los Angeles County Museum and Mount St. Mary’s Choral Festival, $4,354.
- St. Pius X Parish School, art program, $3,500.
- Santa Fe High School, sheet music, sculptures, craft projects, $6,171.
- Santa Fe Springs Christian School, art projects, field trip to Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, and trip to Disney animation studio, $6,266.
- And the city of Santa Fe Springs art program and Hispanic Heritage Student Academy, $5,450.
The City Council has given out the allocations since 1991, City Manager Thaddeus McCormack said.
In other action Aug. 28, the council:
- Contracted with Richard C. Slade and Associates of Studio City, lower of two bidders at $51,820, for consulting services on the rehabilitation of Water Well No. 1, 8634 Dice Road. Total cost is estimated at $70,000 with administration and contingencies, and will come from the Municipal Water Fund, said Public Works Director Noe Negrete.Negrete said the well was closed down recently when it was discovered that contamination with hazardous substances from the former Omega Chemical Company in Whittier had flowed to the well’s groundwater plume.
Once rehabilitated Well No. 1 will go back in service and provide “safe drinking water for residents and businesses. It will improve the reliability and efficiency of the water system and allow the city to purchase less water from outside sources, which continue to increase their water rates and charges, said McCormack.
- Approved a recyclable materials permit for Kevin J. Demedici, United Alloys and Metals, Inc., 9600 John St. Demedici will collect or purchase the materials and divide them into categories for recycling, said Margarita Munoz of Police Services.
- Welcomed new Libary Manager Joyce Ryan to replace Hilary Keith, who has resigned to accept a similar position in San Jose.
